Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a Champions League tie as Barcelona beat Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 to reach the quarterfinals of Champions League with a crushing 10-2 aggregate win on Wednesday.
Argentina star and Barcelona player Lionel Messi became the first player in the history of the Champions League to score five goals in one game.

This Argentine player has scored 29 goals in the European competition. The Argentine scored five goals; two in the first half, three in the second half. Messi’s brilliant display broke long-standing European records.

Lionel Messi, despite his sublime display, was humble after the match: “The most important thing is that we won, that’s what we wanted”
"Without Messi, Barca is the best team," Leverkusen coach Robin Dutt said. "And with him, they are in another galaxy."
"We'll never see a player like him again," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. "He is one of a kind."

He became the first player to score four goals twice in the Champions League. Messi bettered his previous record of four against Arsenal two seasons ago and now has 12 goals from seven Champions League matches after a majestic attacking performance from the World Player of the Year.
The three-time FIFA player of the year scored in the 25th, 42nd and 49th minutes for a 3-0 lead and his 17th career hat trick for Barcelona, then added goals in the 58th and 84th minutes for the first five-goal game of his professional career.
"Messi is a joke. For me the best ever," Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney wrote on Twitter.
