Chelsea wins first Champions League Title |
Didier Drogba was the hero as Chelsea shattered Bayern Munich’s Champions League dream here at the Allianz Arena on Saturday with victory in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out in Chelsea vs Bayern Munich the Champions League Final 2012.
Drogba emerged as the saviour scoring the equalizing goal for his Chelsea side in the dying minutes of the normal 90minutes of the Champions League Final 2012 cancelling Bayern’s lead courtesy Thomas Mueller and pushing the match into extra time at 1 all.
Bayern appeared the most likely to annex the Champions League 2012 trophy following several attempts on goal. After the 30minutes of fierce Champions League Final battle between the two which saw a full display of entertaining soccer even with a penalty miss by Arjen Robben, the penalty kicks were set to decide the ultimate winners.
For Bayern, it would have been their fifth UEFA Champions League title whilst Chelsea, their first Champions League Final trophy.
Considering the fact that it was a Bayern Home ground, many thought it was a done deal but Chelsea were in to pull a surprise to all in this Chelsea vs Bayern Munich Champions League Final 2012.
Chelsea did hold firm in a game in which Bayern had at least 60% of the play with the Dutch winger Arjen Robben performing at his most commanding. Every time he got the ball he automatically - it seemed – beat the first Chelsea defender.
But this was where Chelsea showed their style – and game plan. Robben beat the first defender – but there was another one – and if he was beaten – there was another one.
Bayern had every reason to be frustrated but they stuck to their attacking game plan. Chelsea cleared their lines but the ball came back immediately. It was 0 – 0 at half time then in the last 10 minutes Bayern finally scored and it looked like the end for Chelsea. But then came the man, a rare Chelsea corner and Drogba scored with a power header.
It had had to be him but after 30 minutes of extra time it was still 1 – 1 and penalty shoot out time.
Every football game fan in the world knows the golden rule. In a penalty shoot out, Germany or a German side always wins.
It was Chelsea’s Juan Mata that saw the first miss, giving more hope to Bayern Munich of their ability to easily take the trophy. For Chelsea, all hope was not lost as they strived hard to if for nothing at all lost gloriously.
Like a flash of lightning, Bayern’s midfield maestro Bastian Schweinsteiger and Iviva Ovic missed their spot kicks putting them one less an opportunity to take the UEFA champions league title behind Chelsea.
Sure enough, they went ahead. Then they finally missed - and missed again. It all came down to the last penalty. Guess who was up for it? Didier Drogba.
The decider was the last kick to be taken by the 34-year old Ivorian international Didier Drogba. With ease, Drogba converted the kick into a goal resulting in an assurance of having both hands on the much desired trophy at 4-3 against Bayern Munich.
This left Bayern’s champion’s league hopes shattered as there was nothing else to be done, Chelsea had reached the feat and clung the title.
Most streets in the German capital were amazingly quite than expected and German beer nowhere to be found. Indeed, Bayern played so well from the sound of the commencing whitsle till the end of all proceeding getting over 60% possession but as some say, luck was just not on their side, losing to The Blues from London.
Great celebrations for Chelsea, the first time ever taking the UEFA Champions League Title and with coach Roberto Di Matteo
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has spend millions of dollars over nine years in his quest for the Champions League title. Now, when the odds were against them, they finally lifted the trophy.
